Spanish
River Provincial Park
One
of southern Canada's great wilderness rivers, the Spanish is
located northwest of Sudbury in Ontario.
Our
1:60,000 scale map shows you the rapids, falls, swifts,
campsites, portages, access points and other features of the
East and West Branches from Biscotasi Lake and Duke Lake in
the north to Agnew Lake in the south.
This
river makes for a great introductory whitewater holiday
(except in high water when more advanced skills are
required), particularly the East Branch. The West Branch is
a little more remote with more difficult rapids to paddle or
portage around.
In
addition to a detailed description of the river, we've also
provided lots of info about the rich log drive history of
the area, the plentiful animals (black bears, moose, wolves,
etc.), access options, local outfitters, safety concerns and
much more. Get the map. It has the answers to most of your
questions. If it doesn't, we do, so give us a
call!
One
of the real treats of this river is taking a train ride from
Cartier or Sudbury north to your put-in along with your
canoe and gear.
Below
is a simple map showing the area our map covers. It also
refers to some of our other maps in this area including
Mississagi,
Halfway
and some others nearing completion.
The
Spanish has recently been reclassified as a Provincial Park.
Access points, campsites and portages are regularly
maintained, and the river itself patrolled from time to time
by park personnel.
