Why Go:
Obatanga is a charming medium-sized park straddling the Trans-Canada Hwy 17 north of Wawa. Still relatively unknown, and therefore quieter than other Parks, it has a great lakeside campground in a red pine forest, plus an extensive wilderness area of superb paddling and hiking terrain. Experienced paddlers can take off into the extensive backcountry which includes the headwaters of the semi-famous Dog River. Novice or family paddlers can try out campsites on small quiet lakes a short paddle from the campground. If hiking is your game then try the 2.4km loop Forest Fire Trail adjacent to the campground. For a longer jaunt consider the more rugged Knife Lake Trail across the highway, that thrusts into the heart of Obatanga's backcountry.

Campground campers have plenty to occupy them too including a centrally-located comfort station, playground, picnic area, boat launch and 1,000 metre-long natural sand beach. Pretty darned nice, we say.

Whether you're heading west and need a place to spend the night, or looking for a less busy wilderness destination to spend a week or two, Obatanga is the place.
